This lawsuit was filed on behalf of a U.S. citizen unlawfully detained under an immigration detainer. In 2012, he sued the United States, federal immigration officials, and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department in federal court for false imprisonment, negligence, and violations of the California Constitution and U.S. Constitution. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by NIPNLG, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and the Law Office of Richard L. Coshnear. The United States settled the torts claims for monetary damages and an admission that detainers are not mandatory.
