More than 150 Organizations Urge DHS to Change Course on Enforcement

On Monday, June 28th, a letter signed by 156 organizations was sent to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas urging DHS and all its components, including ICE and CBP, to change course on enforcement to protect families and communities and keep them whole.
The letter argued that DHS should not extend the harms of our racist criminal legal system to its immigration functions by categorically barring people from receiving favorable prosecutorial discretion and that barring people from relief based on criminal convictions imports the racism and biases endemic to the criminal legal system and perpetuates them further.
In conjunction with the letter, the National Immigration Project also released The Human Costs of ICE’s Enforcement Framework, a mini report, highlighting stories of community members who have been categorically excluded from immigration relief due to DHS’s current enforcement framework.
